MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded by the 12S rRNA gene, composed of 16 amino acids. It functions as a metabolic regulator, influencing cellular homeostasis through the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key mediator of energy balance.
